Woman dead after house fire near Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Officials say an elderly woman was found dead Friday after a fire in her Cumberland Township home.

The two-alarm fire sparked around noon in the first block of Roberta Way.

The woman, said to be in her late 80s, was found on her back porch and pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe she was trying to escape the fire. Her name was not immediately released.

Her son, who is in his 50s, escaped the home through a bay window. He was flown to a Maryland hospital for treatment of burns.

Cumberland Township police Chief Don Boehs said 75 to 100 rounds of ammunition went off during the fire but did not cause any injuries. A township police officer was transported to Gettysburg hospital for inhaling smoke, but is expected to be okay.

The home reportedly is a total loss.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
