Marysville woman waives hearing in fake fundraiser case

MARYSVILLE, Pa. (WHTM) – A Perry County woman accused of creating a fake fundraising event is headed to trial after waiving her preliminary hearing Friday.

Shelby R. Weigle, 44, of Marysville, is charged with theft by deception.

Police say Weigle last year used a community Facebook page to advertise a holiday bazaar at the Penn Township municipal building. The event was billed as a fundraiser for a local family who lost their home in a fire.

The bazaar was canceled when investigators said the family didn’t exist and a photo Weigle posted was of a fire in another state.

By waiving the hearing, Weigle doesn’t admit guilt but conceeds there is evidence to support the charge. Court records indicate she plans to waive her formal arraignment in Perry County Court.
