Hundreds line up to pay respects to Justice Antonin Scalia

Outside the U.S. Supreme Court on the day Associate Justice Antonin Scalia lay in repose.

WASHINGTON (MEDIA GENERAL) – Associate Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s body lay in repose inside the same building where he built his legacy as a conservative icon Friday.

Supreme Court officers carried his casket up the white marble steps. Scalia’s former law clerks, dressed in black, flanked the casket by standing in two long lines that led from the base of the court’s stairs up to its grand doorway.

His son offered a prayer among family and Scalia’s eight fellow justices inside the Supreme Court’s Great Hall. Once the private ceremony finished, the public was allowed inside to show their respect.

“I don’t think he legislated on the bench,” Rhelata Bernard said when describing why she liked Justice Scalia.

Hundreds waited in the blustery cold throughout the day. At one point, the long line of mourners and admirers went around the block.

“It was solemn. It was what you’d expect,” Bob Exline, visiting from Indiana, said.

They respected Scalia’s view of the Constitution and his trademark wit, which through his writing, can bring a smile and debate for generations to come.

“I thought he had really thoughtful, um, intelligent, delicious opinions. Whether you agree with him or not – his opinions, his dissents, they were just remarkable treasures,” Rek LeCounte said.

Scalia’s body will lie in repose until 8 p.m. EST. His funeral is scheduled to take place on Saturday.
