Harrisburg police check suspicious backpack after bomb threat

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Downtown streets around Strawberry Square were closed for about two hours Thursday afternoon while police investigated a bomb threat.

Officers were called to investigate after a woman saw a man place the backpack in a trash can in the area of North Third and Market streets around 4 p.m.

The man reportedly told the woman “there might be a bomb” in the backpack, investigators said.

Authorities x-rayed the backpack and found it contained only a candle.

They said the person responsible will face charges if caught.

Police cleared the scene just before 6 p.m.
