Hardware stores see increased sales ahead of predicted winter storm

WILLOW STREET, Pa. (WHTM) – A new snow shovel was a must-have for Cathy Fichtner of New Providence.

“I want my neighbor’s shovel,” she joked as she stood inside EM Herr Ace Hardware.

ABC 27 News found folks in Lancaster County preparing for possibly the first significant snowfall of the season at the store.

The ABC 27 StormTrack Center Team predicts Lancaster County could see 12 to 18 inches of snow starting Friday night and continuing into Saturday.

“It kind of brings back memories of the snow of ’96,” store owner Dennis Herr said.

He told ABC 27 News that folks started stocking up on winter items on Monday.

“We had a mild winter and we had a lot of inventory,” he said. “All of the sudden people are coming in and they’re picking up snow blowers, shovels, salt.”

He said snow blower repairs have also skyrocketed.

Adam Habecker of New Providence didn’t need much to get ready for a potential storm. He bought a shovel and ice melt. If it does snow, he’ll have help with the clean up.

“I stay in the house,” he said. “I have someone do it for me. I have heart issues. This (the shovel and ice melt) is for the neighbor to do it for me.”

Eve Gordon of Delta bought wood pellets for her stove. She said if it does snow, she wants to be warm.

“My husband will be making sure the snow blower is working properly,” she said. “I will make sure I have stuff to make him a pot of soup.”

Herr suggested that folks get what they need for the storm before it snows.
