A first of its kind community park is coming to Dillsburg.
The lot on Old York Road has been nothing more than a pile of dirt for quite some time.
“We’ve never had a park, so we’re kind of excited,” borough council president John Richardson said.
The idea to bring a park to Dillsburg started in 2013 when leaders felt the surrounding parks weren’t enough.
“A lot of them are tied up with baseball fields, soccer fields, so on and so forth, so they’re not always readily available to families and mothers and children,” Richardson said.
Within a mile, more than 1,200 homes surround the lot.
“It would be nice to have something in walking distance for all of the neighborhoods that live around here,” said Theresa Seip, who lives nearby.
But the park will be more than just a few swings and slides. Phase One includes a walking path, a tot lot, pavilion, fitness equipment, and a dog park. Phase Two and Three will include a borough hall, a maintenance building, and a swimming pool, but won’t be built for several years.
The total cost to build the park is more than $500,000, but a majority will be covered by grants.
” I think it’s going to be really awesome. I think there’s going to be a lot of people here, excited to use it,” Seip said.
Phase One is expected to be completed by June. If you’d like to volunteer, call the borough at 432-9969 and ask for Karen Diveler.
