Tips for staying active and eating healthy during winter’s coldest days

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Many people have made resolutions to get healthy, but staying focused this time of year can be a challenge. Researchers at the University of Scranton find that nearly 30% of new years resolutions don’t make it past 2 weeks.

Tim Evans, owner of Fit For Life 24 in Greenville, explains: “They want to take care of themselves, they want to get back and make new resolutions. So they want to get back into those fitness goals and they know that spring is coming up and the summer so they know they’re trying to prepare for the beach and the upcoming vacations.”

Booking a trip or a summer vacation is a great way to stay motivated. Setting realistic fitness goals with the help of a professional gives you the best chance of being successful. Science also suggests that getting some new workout gear and finding some new songs to jam out to can help you look forward to your workout. Cold weather isn’t an excuse to skip out on your workout. But if you plan to run or jog out in it, there are a few things to keep in mind.

“You always want to stay nice and bundled up, but you’ve got to keep in mind don’t put too much stuff on because you are gonna get really heated as you begin to exercise outside,” says Evans.

If you’re running after dark, wear reflective clothing and watch your step. Potholes and cracks crop up this time of year.

Quick meals and fast food that aren’t exactly the healthiest can be tempting so experts suggest you load up on fruits and vegetables instead. They’re a good way to fill up on something that’s good for you so you won’t want something that’s not.

Finally, don’t be too hard on yourself when you have an off day. Remember: keep your eye on the prize.
