Good news for skiers and snowboarders: the colder weather means area slopes will soon open.
Liberty Mountain Resort and Whitetail Resort will open Thursday. Roundtop Mountain Resort will open Wednesday. It’s finally white with snow.
“We probably made over a foot of snow last night, so the slopes are looking better now,” said Chris Dudding, marketing director for Roundtop Mountain Resort. “We’re gonna make snow around the clock till tomorrow morning. We have to get the groomers out there to spread it all out nice, but it’ll be great by 9:00 tomorrow morning.”
It may be a record-breaking late start for the resort, but a strong one.
“We’re gonna have seven slopes open tomorrow and actually six lifts open tomorrow. So, we’ll have slopes for all ability levels and it’ll be a great opening day. The conditions should be awesome,” Dudding said. “Tubing is not open yet, but snow tubing is probably going to open later this week. So, if people are interested, stay tuned.”
“I’m excited about that. I really, really like to go over to Roundtop because we live really close to it, and I like to go over and snowboard and ski,” 8-year-old Jack Deluca said.
Deluca was just one of the many who stopped by Mountainside Ski and Sports to make last-minute preps before hitting the slopes. It’s a warm welcome.
“I think it was so, so warm in the early art of the season,” said Dave Whitney, owner of Mountainside Ski and Sports. “I don’t think you can make up what was lost totally.”
Deluca hoped to make up for lost time.
“Skiing’s a little bit easier and you can kind of do more tricks with skiing,” Deluca said. “And snowboarding is kind of fun, it’s like really fun.”
