York Township fire chief pulls man from burning car

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) – Gary Gregory and his wife were in their home along Rock Dam Road in York Township on Monday morning when they heard a loud noise.

“I was downstairs and she yelled come up,” Gregory said. “We went outside and we saw that a car hit a utility pole and it started to catch on fire.”

Gregory’s wife called 911. York Township Fire Chief Nate Tracey was first to arrive on the scene. Gregory says he wasted no time.

“He got out of his truck and went straight to the car,” Gregory said. “It’s a good thing he did. There is a chance the car could have blown up.”

Dash cam video shows Tracey pulling the man from the car and dragging him to safety. Tracey declined to be interviewed on camera.

Gregory says Chief Tracey is a hero.

“He did his job. That is what he is supposed to do,” he said, “but he put his own life on the line and that takes a special person to do that.”

The driver was taken to the hospital. There was no word on his condition.
