Essentially, infections in the hospital happen because people who are at the highest risk of acquiring infections are those that are in the hospital. While those patients are hospitalized, surgeries and procedures can put them at higher risk of acquiring infections. If they do get an infection while in the hospital, it tends to be harder to treat because the bacteria are more likely to be resistant to standard antibiotics.
