LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) – A Leola woman will serve 1-2 years in prison for beating her 6-year-old son with a belt.
Rebecca A. Souden, 35, will also spend three years on probation following her release as part of a sentence ordered Monday by Lancaster County Judge Donald Totaro.
Souden was convicted by a jury in October of endangering a child and simple assault.
Authorities said she hit her son with the belt at their home in January. A social worker at the boy’s school noticed welts on his face and then discovered larger welts on his buttocks.
She argued at trial that she whipped the boy to discipline him, but prosecutors countered the lashings were criminal abuse.
Souden no longer has custody of any of her four children, and her guardian rights over the 6-year-old victim and another child are pending. She lost custody of two other children following investigations involving social services.
