Ride share services expanded for Cumberland County seniors

CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) – Senior citizens in Cumberland County can now get rides to more destinations.

Cumberland County’s ride-share program through Rabbit Transit already offers fare-free service to seniors 60 and older. They can get rides to medical appointments, admission and discharge to and from hospital and nursing facilities, social service agencies and events sponsored by these agencies, senior centers, grocery stores, banks, post offices, pharmacies, laundromats, visits to immediate family in local hospitals or nursing facilities, libraries, as well as work and volunteer assignments.

“Many seniors rely on county transportation to get them to the senior center, to doctor appointments, to day programs,” said Matthew Gallardo, a Messiah Lifeways spokesman. “Without it, they wouldn’t be able to get out nearly as much. It would be very difficult for them to do that.”

After getting requests from older adults, the service is expanding.

The 60 and older population can now get a ride to numerous local support group meetings including but not limited to Alcoholics Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, cancer support, caregiver’s support, diabetes support, and Parkinson’s support.

“These are groups that people really become connected to and a part of, and for them to be able to go to those meetings on a regular basis is extremely important,” Gallardo said.

The expanded service allows seniors to remain independent and healthy.

“It helps with isolation and depression. For someone who is at a point where they’re no longer driving, their world really begins to shrink. So, transportation becomes a huge issue for them,” Gallardo said. “If they all of a sudden are not able to drive to those appointments or get to support groups, all of sudden it makes their like much more challenging.”

To confirm eligibility or to schedule a trip, residents should contact Rabbit Transit, Cumberland County’s shared ride service coordinator, at 1-800-632-9063 or online at www.rabbittransit.org.

Guidelines require all trips to be scheduled by noon the day prior to the date of service requested.
