Police: Thief used tow truck to steal van while owner was in post office

UPDATE on Dec.9 – Police say the tow company inadvertently towed the wrong vehicle and no crime was committed.


UPDATE: Police say the stolen vehicle has been recovered.


LEOLA, Pa. (WHTM) – Police are asking for the public’s help in solving a brazen auto theft in Lancaster County.

East Hempfield Township police said the thief used a tow truck to hook up and take off with a minivan, all while the owner was inside the Leola Post Office for just 10 or 15 minutes.

The minivan is a silver 2001 Honda Odyssey with a Pennsylvania license plate of HTX-1892. It was stolen just after 11 a.m. Monday.

Surveillance video shows it was hooked to a red pickup truck with a tow crane and yellow or gold lettering on the doors.
