HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – It was Black Friday, then Cyber Monday, and now it’s #GivingTuesday.
It’s a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media. Giving Tuesday kicks off the charitable season when many people focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.
You can give to your community by going to www.givingtuesday.org, clicking on the search button on the right side of the screen, and then putting in the name of your city. It will then show a list of organizations you can give to.
Doing a search for Harrisburg brings up seven groups to help. Some of them include the Bethesda Mission, Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area, and PennFuture (Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future).
Giving Tuesday is now in its fourth year. It is observed on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, using the power of social media and the generosity of people to bring change to their communities.
To participate, people donate their time, money, and talent to bring them together with non-profit groups, civic organizations, and businesses.
#GivingTuesday has become a worldwide movement that supports giving not only on the designated day but also throughout the year. It was created by 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City.
About one-third of millennials are expected to take part in the event.
