1 in 4 women in the US are estimated to become victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that domestic violence costs the U.S. at least $9.05 billion each year. Providing free legal services can actually reduce domestic violence and lawyers play a big part. Women represented by a lawyer are much more likely to successfully obtain a protective order. With a protective order, women are less likely to experience violence. A lawyer can also help victims with other related issues that prevent them from leaving their abusive relationship such as child custody, immigration status and housing.
Having a lawyer isn’t cheap. That’s why the YWCA is hosting their 8th Annual Pursuit of Justice Purse Auction on December 3, 2015 at 5:30 pm.
There will be live and silent auctions of designer bags, music, food, wine, and fun. The raffle prize is a Primavera bracelet featuring diamonds surrounded by white and yellow gold. All proceeds benefit the YWCA Legal Center in Harrisburg. In its fiscal year 2014-15, the Legal Center provided services to more than 1,300 victims of domestic violence, stalking, dating violence and sexual assault in more than 1,600 cases.
