HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A state Senate committee has approved a bill that would allow private employers to adopt their own veterans’ preference hiring programs.
Senate Bill 1013 was unanimously recommended Wednesday by the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee.
Private employers who adopt a veterans’ employment policy would be exempt from violations of equal employment opportunities laws. They would have to put the policy in writing, add a statement to job postings, and apply the policy to all employment decisions including new hires, promotions, and retention during workforce reductions.
Veterans would include surviving spouses and spouses of disabled veterans.
At least five states allow private employers to adopt a veterans’ preference.
