Harrisburg Cinema helps raise awareness of sexual abuse

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A private advance screening of the film “Spotlight” took place on Tuesday evening at the Midtown Cinema.

The film is a true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the scandal of the child sexual abuse cover-up within the Boston Archdiocese.

State Reps. Mark Rozzi (D-Berks) and Tom Murt (R-Montgomery) hosted the event. Both support legislation that would modify Pennsylvania’s statute of limitations to allow victims to pursue civil action against abusers and the institutions that shield them.

Rozzi has spoken openly about being a victim of abuse as a child. He says we all have to keep the spotlight on the problem.

“I realize that I had to stand up,” he said. “I have to be the voice for the powerless and voiceless and for the children who were abused.”

Rozzi says two friends who were abused by the same priest in Reading during the early 80’s committed suicide. He says he has to continue to fight against sexual abuse so others will not have to endure what they have gone through.
