Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away! Each year families gather around the table to enjoy time with friends and family, and of course, to eat turkey! Turkey still remains the most popular center plate at the dinner table each year, however, Weis Markets has been noticing a growing trend of hams and turduckens being served as a second option.
John Grimes, director of meat merchandising joined us in the Good Day PA kitchen with some tips and tricks to keep in mind when planning that traditional holiday meal.
“You will want to plan for about 1½ pounds of turkey per person and about a ½ pound of ham per person. And leftovers are always a good thing! On average, we recommend that you buy a 15-20 pound turkey and an 8-10 pound ham,” tells Grimes.
“Remember to plan ahead. You will likely need to defrost your turkey. We recommend that you do this in the refrigerator and this can take 3- 5 days. When it comes to cooking your turkey, we recommend roasting at 325 degrees until the internal temperature of the bird reads 165 degrees. Depending on the weight of the bird, this can take 13-14 minutes per pound. Spiral hams are pre-cooked and easy to prepare. They offer guests a great second meat selection at Thanksgiving! Weis Markets carries 30 varieties of ham including the popular spiral ham, boneless hams and bone-in. One of our best sellers comes from Lancaster County.”
