LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) – A state senator who represents Lancaster County says he’s running for Congress.

Republican Senator Lloyd Smucker wants to represent the 16th Congressional District of Pennsylvania after Joe Pitts retires. Pitts announced Friday that he won’t seek re-election next year.

In his announcement Monday, Smucker said he’s received an outpouring of encouragement and support for his candidacy since Pitts’s announcement. He said that played a major part in his decision to seek the office.

Smucker, of West Lampeter Township, was elected to the state Senate 2008.

Pitts, a Republican, has represented the 16th Congressional District since 1997. The district includes parts of Berks and Chester counties.
