United Way of the Capital Region is the managing partner of the community collaboration that provides free tax preparation for low- and moderate-income working families through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
The VITA program was started in 1975 by the IRS to help families take advantage of credits they are eligible for like the Earned Income Tax Credit. Our local VITA program is called Money in Your Pocket and has been in existence since 2002. Last year 230 volunteers at 15 sites in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry Counties and 2 more through a partnership with the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata were able to prepare 5,246 returns and bring $5.2 million back into the community. In addition, based on the average cost of a $159 for a simple return, we saved our clients over $800,000 in professional tax preparation fees. Clients use their refunds to pay bills, pay down debt and save for the future.
Money In Your Pocket will run from January 28, 2016 to April 15, 2016.
