Harrisburg loses a medical leader

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A doctor who served the Harrisburg community for the past 40 years has died.

Dr. Donald Spigner passed away this weekend at age 75.

Born and raised in Texas, Spigner came to Harrisburg in the mid-1970s to run the newly created Hamilton Health Center.

He founded the South Central Pennsylvania Sickle Cell Council and co-founded the Harrisburg-based Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Development Institute.

He retired from his practice at Community Medical Associates and as a senior staff physician at Pinnacle Health System in 2009.

Funeral services will be at St. Paul’s Missionary Baptist Church, 1201 North 17th Street, at 11 a.m. Thursday. Viewing at the church is from 10-11 a.m.

He will be buried in Texas.
