York man suspected as robber who was attacked by dog

DOVER, Pa. (WHTM) – A York man has been arrested for a discount store robbery where the bandit was attacked by a large dog.

Michael Alan Sweeney, 31, was charged Wednesday with robbery, theft, and receiving stolen property, Northern York County Regional police said.

Investigators said they’re still looking for the person who drove Sweeney from the Dollar General Store at 4911 Carlisle Road after the robbery Sunday night.

Police previously reported that the store was robbed by a man who paid for a small item, then placed a pistol on the counter and demanded money from the register.

The robber then fled with the cash and was running through a yard when the dog bit his arm and ripped his sweatshirt.

The dog’s owner confronted the robber as he climbed into a minivan. That’s when police said the robber pointed a handgun at the owner, who instinctively slapped the gun away before the bandit and his driver took off.

Sweeney was placed in York County Prison on $40,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Nov. 24.
