HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Mayor Eric Papenfuse says billboards to market his city are a waste of money, so he has his own plan to attract visitors.
Billboards that read “Early Bird or Night Owl? Find Your Way” make no mention of Harrisburg or events such as the Kipona festival or the annual holiday parade.
More than $170,000 in hotel tax money goes to the Hershey Harrisburg Regional Visitors Bureau between now and the end of the year to market the city. Papenfuse went to Dauphin County Commissioners and he sent the visitors bureau his plan that includes a marketing manager for the city and more teamwork.
The visitors bureau says the billboards are teasers and the full marketing campaign begins next week. No one would go on camera, but a spokesperson said getting upset now is like going to a play, staring at the curtain, and writing a review before seeing the show.
Papenfuse says he’s waiting for a response on the marketing proposal he submitted.
