HIA gets better way to keep planes on course

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (WHTM) – Harrisburg International Airport has landed state-of-the-art equipment to help keep air travelers safe.

The Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System, or STARS, gives air traffic controllers the ability to track more than 1,300 flights at a time within a 60-mile radius of the airport.

The $5 million program also provides flight plan information, weather advisories, and conflict avoidance alerts.

STARS does what once required several air traffic control programs. The plan is to have it in all U.S. airports by 2020.
