Three Mile Island back to normal after brief fire

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (WHTM) – Three Mile Island operators declared an Alert when an overheated motor caused a small fire Monday night.

Exelon spokesman Ralph DeSantis said the fire was in a motor that circulates water to cool plant equipment.

The fire was reported around 10:15 p.m. DeSantis said it was extinguished by TMI firefighters and no help from outside fire companies was needed.

He said the fire did not impact the nuclear reactor and did not pose a threat to public health. He added that the plant remains at full power.

An Alert is the second lowest of four emergency classifications established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
