York church bells ring to remember firefighters lost in line of duty

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) – Bells rang across the country Sunday, and not to announce the time.

At noon, churches and other organizations rang their bells for five minutes straight. It was in honor of the dozens of firefighters lost in the line of duty within the last year.

Two churches in York, First Presbyterian Church and St. Matthew Lutheran Church — both on Market Street — took part in Bells Across America, an annual commemoration for the last five years.

This year, the memorial was to remember 87 firefighters nationwide who never made it home.
