HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A Pennsylvania lawmaker is sponsoring legislation to reduce the waiting time for couples going through a no-fault divorce.
Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) says her proposal, House Bill 380, would allow couples to obtain a divorce one year after separation, instead of two years.
Toohil says prolonging a divorce for two years usually means resolution occurs 3-5 years after the divorce is filed. She says the current waiting period increases legal costs, escalates conflict between couples, and causes additional strain and costs on the courts.
She says reducing the waiting period also would be less traumatic for children.
Toohil says waiting periods for surrounding states range from six months to a year.
