HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Gov. Tom Wolf is endorsing his former chief of staff, Katie McGinty, for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.
In a written statement Monday, Wolf called McGinty a “can-do” person who would be a strong advocate in Washington for Pennsylvanians. Wolf hired McGinty, a former state environment protection commissioner, as his top aide after defeating her and two other candidates in last year’s gubernatorial race.
She is expected to face tough competition in the Democratic primary in April. The other candidates are Joe Sestak, a former congressman and former Navy vice admiral, and John Fetterman, a western Pennsylvania mayor known for his efforts to turn around the down-on-its-luck steel town of Braddock.
The Democrats are hoping to take on Republican Sen. Pat Toomey in the general election.
