On Wednesday, Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse and the Harrisburg police chief will explain how a federal grant will benefit the Harrisburg Police Department.
The department is one of 196 departments receiving the grant under the “Cops Hiring Program” and will receive more than a half-million dollars.
On Monday, Papenfuse received a letter from the Attorney General’s office about the grant.
The funds will be awarded over a three-year period and with the money, the department can hire new officers and re-hire officers that have been laid off.
To receive the grant, Harrisburg had to apply and meet specific requirements.
They were asked to identify specific crime and disorder problems and identify how the money could be used to approach them.
Other local departments were also awarded grant money.
West Chester Township will receive a quarter-million dollars, York City will get more than a million dollars while Morrisville and Hanover Township will both receive $125,000.
