Mother of teens attacked in Harrisburg: Police ‘did not do enough’

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The mother of two brothers mobbed and beaten after the Kipona fireworks Sunday claims police did not do enough.

Dozens of teens beat the 16- and 19-year-old victims near Strawberry Square.

The 16-year-old suffered a fractured jaw, a concussion and bruises all over his body while his older brother is recovering from a sprained neck, fractured nose, and a concussion.

Their mother says police did not respond to her sons’ cries for help, and when the teens finally found an officer, she says he refused to escort them.

In a statement, she said, “This police officer did not take any precautions to ensure my children’s safety at all. This distresses me almost as much as the attack itself. Who do we teach our children to trust if not the police?”

Police say the beating was racially motivated and believe the attackers were the same teens who ransacked a convenience store in Midtown and vandalized more than a dozen cars Saturday night.

Investigators say they expect to make arrests soon.
