Millennials are now the largest generation in American workforce

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)-  More than one-in-three American workers are Millennials, becoming the largest generation in the American workforce this year.

The American workforce is working hard, some of them even on Labor Day. Carlos Cespo, of Springfield told WWLP, “I work seven days a week. Where there’s money, there’s me.”

A recent Pew Research Center study found that more people want that money at a younger age. Millennials-people 18 to 34- are now the largest generation in the labor force surpassing Gen Xer’s-people that are 35 to 50. Gen Xer’s only dominated the labor force for three years.

Even with the cost of college soaring and student debt rising, the study found college graduates earned just $17,000 more each year than those with a high school diploma. The pay gap had been significantly smaller for previous generations.

“Well I only started working about a year ago and I’m 20 now, but I’ve gotten three jobs between now and then,” Elijah Saez, of Springfield said.

On average, American women earn 83 cents for every dollar a man earns, but younger women are narrowing that gap. Michele Sandrim, an airline pilot from Minneapolis, Minnesota says she’s seen the changes, “Now we’re seeing more as the industry is spooling up with the economy again, more women, younger women which is good so higher percentage there. So that’s what I’ve seen.”

What has fallen in the last decade is the number of teens working summer jobs. Less than a third had a job last summer.
