PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Fruit flies are annoying. But they’re not a health risk.
The Oregon Health Department said there is no risk from the fruit flies and they are not a public health issue.
They are no more dangerous than possibly helping to spread germs.
But they are annoying.
Stores sell different kinds of traps that attract the fruit flies and keep them in. Several home remedies, like apple cider in a jar or oil and vinegar in a dish, are popular and somewhat effective.
Most importantly, researchers say to get rid of overripe fruit and peelings, cover other fruit and keep your drains covered. The fruit flies like to eat residue on the side of drain pipes.
If you’re dealing with the pesky winged problem just know you are not alone.
