RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The “Deez Nuts” who is running hot in the North Carolina polls is, it turns out, a 15-year-old boy in Iowa.
According to the Federal Election Commission, Deez Nuts filed for president with a home address in Wallingford, Iowa.
The mock candidate made national news on Wednesday, with Raleigh-based Public Policy Polling said Deez Nuts was at 9 percent in the state. Donald Trump led the poll at 24 percent.
That poll sparked a surge of interest in the real Deez Nuts. The Daily Beast website spoke to a 15-year-old Iowa boy, Brady Olson, who filed for president as Deez Nuts. He’s the son of a farmer and dental assistant and rising sophomore in high school.
Olson got his name into the polls by emailing Public Policy Polling of Raleigh. Jim Williams of told WNCN they got an email from the candidate, asking to be included.
“We joked about it internally,” Williams said. “From time to time we do silly or fun questions toward the end of our polls.”
With the election still a year and a half away, PPP first included Deez Nuts in a Minnesota poll, where he got 7 percent. He then got 8 percent in an Iowa poll and then 9 percent in the North Carolina poll released Wednesday. Those North Carolina numbers sparked a social media frenzy.
Williams said PPP didn’t know until Wednesday that Deez Nuts was a 15-year-old boy but didn’t seem overly concerned, since the candidacy is a joke anyway.
“We like to lighten things up every once in a while,” Williams said.
Not amused by the poll was Kara Carter, spokeswoman for the North Carolina Republican Party. Carter said PPP “shouldn’t be taken seriously” for running a fake poll and added, “PPP has a history of exaggerating polls to generate false enthusiasm for Democrat candidates and assist with their fundraising efforts, only to get more accurate closer to Election Day.”
Either way, Deez Nuts has no chance to get elected – at least right now.
Under the Constitution, you have to be 35 years old to be president.
Deez Nuts in 2035, perhaps?
