Fatal crash on I-81 shuts down lanes in Cumberland County

UPDATE: Reconstruction is underway at a fatal crash site on I-81 near exit 45. PennDOT officials believe lanes may not reopen until 1 or 2 p.m.

Five vehicles were reportedly involved in the crash, one of which was a tractor trailer. We’re told the tractor trailer was unable to break in time and rear ended stopped vehicles.

PREVIOUSLY REPORTED:

PennDOT officials tell abc27 a vehicle is stuck under a tractor trailer that is lying across the median near exit 45 (College Street). They have reported someone was killed in the crash, no other details were reported.

This happened just before 8 a.m.

Both sides of the highway are currently shut down between exit 44 and exit 45.

Cumberland County officials released this detour on Twitter: Drivers should detour to Route 34 north to Route 11 south to Route 465 and then back on Interstate 81 at exit 44.

Back roads are backlogged as drivers seek alternate routes. It is advised that drivers avoid the entire Carlisle area at this time.

No word when the highway will reopen.
