HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Former Governor Ed Rendell will chair Katie McGinty’s campaign as she seeks the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate next year.
McGinty was secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection during Rendell’s administration. Rendell says he encouraged McGinty to challenge Republican incumbent Pat Toomey because she’s a problem solver who knows how to get things done.
McGinty was chief of staff to Governor Tom Wolf, but stepped down last month to pursue the Senate campaign. She ran for governor last year and placed last in the four-way race for the Democratic nomination.
She faces opposition in the primary from former U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, who narrowly lost to Toomey in the 2010 election.
“It is an honor to have Governor Rendell as the chair of my campaign,” McGinty said in a statement. “He knows how to win tough races and I appreciate his support and encouragement.”
