UPDATE at 2 p.m. – Route 117 has reopened at Market Street,
UPDATE at 11:45 a.m. – Police officers responded to a burglary at a Campbelltown gun store and killed the suspect during an exchange of gunfire, District Attorney David Arnold said.
Arnold said alarms sounded at the Horseshoe Pike Gun Shop, at 2703 Horseshoe Pike, before dawn Monday and the officers responded to find the burglary in progress.
“Here they encounter a man they know is stealing guns,” Arnold said. “One would assume he is armed. He turns out to be heavily armed. I just hope people consider how difficult it is for officers to make those decisions.”
Arnold said the officers chased the suspect into a nearby soybean field where shots were exchanged and the suspect was killed.
The suspect was not immediately identified.
Arnold did not say how many shots were fired by police officers. He said the suspect fired at least one shot.
“I do know for a fact that he fired a shot because we have the casing recovered,” he said.
No police officers were injured.
A state police helicopter was searching the area in the morning. Arnold did not comment when asked if other suspects may have been involved in the burglary.
Officers were expected to remain on the scene through the early afternoon. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is assisting in the investigation.
Horseshoe Pike, also known as Route 117, remains closed at Market Street.
UPDATE at 10:35 a.m. – The office of Lebanon County Coroner Dr. Jeffrey Yocum has confirmed it is on the scene of a police-involved shooting in Campbelltown.
The shooting occurred early Monday at the Horseshoe Pike Gun Shop, at 2703 Horseshoe Pike.
Route 117 remains closed at Market Street. Route 322 in the area is open.
UPDATE at 10 a.m. – Authorities say an incident at the Horseshoe Pike Gun Shop in Campbelltown is a police-involved shooting.
District Attorney David Arnold said the shooting early Monday resulted from a burglary at the store.
The shooting involved an officer from the South Londonderry Township Police Department. The officer was not injured.
The suspect’s condition was not available. A state police helicopter was circling the area, and officers were seen going into a nearby field.
The gun shop owner refused to comment on the incident. A neighbor reported hearing alarms between 4-5 a.m.
UPDATE at 9:25 a.m. – A state police spokesman says the incident at the Horseshoe Pike Gun Shop began in South Londonderry Township. He said the incident may involve a shooting, but he could provide no additional information.
CAMPBELLTOWN, Pa. (WHTM) – Route 117 is closed at Market Street because of a police incident at the Horseshoe Pike Gun Shop, according to Lebanon County 911 dispatchers.
Route 322 is open in the area.
