EAST PENNSBORO TWP., Pa. (WHTM) – Laser technology is just the latest way police officers are getting drivers to slow down.
The technology is called lidar.
It’s a handheld device that cost thousands of dollars, but with it police can monitor speed, how closely people drive, and even take pictures.
Members of the East Pennsboro Police Department have already begun using the devices and they say it helps prevent speeding.
“Nobody wants to get a speeding citation but if you’re going to get a speeding citation and you’re going to get points on your license you want to know that it was 100 percent correct and you were doing exactly what you’re accused of doing,” said Lt. Mark Green.
In Pennsylvania, however, lidar can’t be used for speed enforcement. It can only be used for tailgaiting and accident reconstruction.
Currently, state police is the only law enforcement group that can use speed enforcement devices like radars.
