Gettysburg fire demonstration provides training for firefighters

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The Gettysburg Fire Department held a structure burn on Sunday, July 26 to train firefighters.

The house was donated by the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church for the use of fire training.

There were multiple volunteer fire departments that participated including, the Gettysburg Fire Department, New Oxford United Hook and Ladder, West Hanover Fire Department, and the Littlestown Fire Department.

The training exercise ran through the PA State Fire Academy and helped firefighters train for structure fires in a controlled live fire situation.

Firefighters often practice their skills in a “burn building”. However, the Gettysburg Fire Department said that even though it is an excellent training method, it cannot compare to the variability and conditions of an actual structure fire.
