Firefighters return from serving in Alaska

MIDDLETOWN, Pa (WHTM) – Forty firefighters have returned home after a two-week deployment in Alaska to fight wildfires.

Most of the firefighters were with the State Forestry Bureau.

They flew in around 12:30 a.m. on Friday, July 9 and stayed overnight at Lower Swatara fire house.

Alaska has had hundreds of wildfires this Spring and Summer.

Levi Gelnett. Wildfire Prevention Specialist, stated, “They typically have a fair amount of fires, but up there a lot of it is lighting strikes.

They get thunderstorms rolling through and it’ll strike and smolder until it dries out.  And actually the fire will keep burning until the snow falls”.
