“Luke Duke” visits Carlisle Chrysler Nationals, speaks out about Confederate Flag

CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) – Many people believe the Confederate Flag is a symbol of history, not a symbol of hate.

Actor Tom Wopat, who played Luke Duke on “The Dukes of Hazzard,” was in Carlisle Friday for the Chrysler Nationals.

His character’s car, the “General Lee,” was there too.

It has a Confederate Flag painted on the roof.

In light of the Charleston tragedy, TV Land pulled the show off the air.

Wopat says that’s a shame because the car’s paint job was never meant to be racist.

“For the people who view the flag as something really offensive, I understand their position and I empathize with them. There’s a lot of history behind that thing and it’s very complicated. But we’re just doing a TV show,” Wopat said.

The original “General Lee” was purchased by 2-time Masters Champion Bubba Watson.

He recently said he would paint an American Flag over the Confederate Flag.
