RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – It’s been a record-breaking year for shark attacks off the North Carolina coast.
On Wednesday, a 68-year-old man was bitten by a shark several times while in waist-deep water off North Carolina’s Outer Banks. He’s in a hospital in fair condition.
He suffered wounds to his ribcage, lower leg, hip and both hands as he tried to fight off the animal.
Laura Irish Hefty of New Hope, Pennsylvania, says she was about 100 yards away when she saw a crowd gathering on the beach. Hefty says the man was treated on the beach for about 20 minutes until he was stabilized and carried to a road.
The man is the seventh person attacked along the North Carolina coast in three weeks.
