Hummelstown tavern to hold fundraiser for officer charged with homicide

Chick’s Tavern in Hummelstown is being criticized by many who live in the area for announcing it will host a pig roast to benefit Lisa Mearkle, the Hummelstown police officer charged with homicide in the February shooting death of David Kassick.

Owner Lonnie Blough says he is holding the event to support his friend, and he says she deserves a fair trial, and in this country, you are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Hunt for Justice, Inc., is sponsoring the pig roast for Officer Mearkle in early August at Chick’s Tavern.  Chris Hunt says his organization helps police officers around the country who are charged with crimes.  He is leading the fundraising for Mearkle’s legal defense.  Hunt for Justice provided legal and financial help to Officer Darren Wilson, who shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

The pig roast will take place on August 2 and it begins at 2pm.  The fundraiser is accepting $10 donations
