Crews battle early-morning house fire in Cumberland County

A Cumberland County fire chief said crews had trouble getting inside a burning house Thursday morning due to a hoarding situation in the home.

The started around 3:45 am. Thursday on the 800 block of Baltimore Pike in South Middleton Township, near the Adams County line.

Chief Tim Yingst said the homeowners were alerted to the fire by sounds in the house; there were no working smoke detectors. The husband and wife were able to escape the home before they were seriously injured.

The wife was taken to Carlisle Hospital for burns to her legs. The husband suffered burns to his back but refused treatment.

The chief says one dog made it out, 11 cats are unaccounted for.

No word on what caused the fire, the investigation continues.
