Crews to implode vacant Harrisburg office building

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The walls of a vacant office building will come tumbling down this weekend.

Demolition crews are getting ready to implode the former Bertolino building at Seventh and Reily street.

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, headquartered across the street, will use the Bertolino lot to create more than 200 new parking spaces for employees.

PHEAA spokesman Keith New said rehabilitating the 25-year-old building would have been too costly and there was no safe way to dismantle it, so it will be imploded at 7 a.m. Sunday.

Seventh Street in the area will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., provided the implosion is carried out on schedule.

Residents who live in the immediate area have been told to stay indoors and away from their windows.

The state Department of Human Services was the last tenant of the 120,000 square foot building.

The parking lot is expected to be completed by the end of September.
