Eberly Lumber Company has been in Mechanicsburg for 155 years.
“We started in 1860, that’s before the Civil War,” said Lee Eberly.
Lee and his brother I.S. have been running the family business for over 40 years. They say big box companies have hurt their business.
“The box business came in and just gave more selection. They really hurt us on the retail side,” I.S. Eberly said.
“Plus, their hours that they keep. I cannot be open until 9, 10 o’clock at night, Sundays and all day Saturday,” Lee Eberly said.
The brothers sent letters to their loyal customers last week, letting them know the store would be closing.
“Well, I feel a little sad and I feel bad that it happened on my watch that were going to shut it down,” I.S. Eberly said. “I would have liked to been able to pass it on to somebody.”
The brothers have five daughters between them, but they were not interested in taking over the family business.
“It’s very tough because you’ve had a relationship with all your customers,” Lee Eberly said.
“It is a sad day in Mechanicsburg because they provided a great service to this community,” said Paul Dorisch, a longtime customer.
“I’d just like to thank the people that were patrons and the contractors that kept us going for all those years,” I.S. Eberly said.
They expect to stay open until the end of June.
