Woman lost $1,900 in phone scam, police say

LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) – A Lancaster County woman lost $1,900 to a scam artist posing as a federal agent.

The woman reported that she received a phone call Thursday from someone who identified themselves as being from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, and she said that’s what her caller ID showed, Manheim Township police said in a news release.

The caller threatened deportation if the woman did not send money though a money order. She sent two money orders totaling $1,900, police said.

At the same time, police said the woman’s husband received a call from the same number and was told his wife was being held for ransom in the 2000 block of Fruitville Pike.

He called police, his wife was located, and investigators determined the entire incident was a scam.
