Pope Francis says the Catholic Church should make it easier for divorced Catholics to remarry. As a result, the Diocese of Pittsburgh has eliminated annulment fees.
Bishop Ronald Gainer of the Harrisburg Diocese says he applauds Pittsburgh’s decision, but Harrisburg has a $500 annulment fee – and Gainer says it’s used to pay twelve staff members who work strictly on annulments.
Gainer says couples who go through the process have the option to make monthly payments, pay a reduced fee, or if they can’t afford it, pay nothing and the process will still move forward.
“We hope the people who come to the diocese to apply for an annulment understand that this is the requested fee,” said Gainer, “and in no way will it be an hurdle going forward if you find it to be a financial burden.”
The Pittsburgh diocese says it will cover the costs of annulments through a fundraising campaign.
