Adams County man pleads guilty to making false claims to IRS

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – An Adams County man has pleaded guilty to making a false claim to the IRS that resulted in a $288,000 tax refund check.

Mitchell Orewiler, 34, admitted in court Wednesday that his 2007 return falsely claimed federal income tax had been withheld on interest he had earned.

Orewiler requested a refund of approximately $288,000 while knowing he was not entitled to it, according to U.S. Attorney Peter Smith. The IRS sent Orewiler the money.

Smith said Orewiler faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

A plea agreement filed by prosecutors is awaiting approval by the court.
