Police: Mechanicsburg man crashed after fleeing stop

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A Cumberland County man was arrested after police said he fled a traffic stop on Route 15 and was later found to have marijuana and alcohol in his car.

Andrew James Schmidt, 19, of Mechanicsburg, was clocked at 98 mph in a 55 mph zone Wednesday morning and he initially pulled over, but then took off as the officer approached his car, Upper Allen Township police said in a news release.

As officers were looking for him, they got word a vehicle matching the description of Schmidt’s had crashed at the intersection of Gettysburg Pike and Floribunda Lane.

The officers found the car abandoned in the middle of the road and soon located Schmidt and a 17-year-old in the area of West Rosegarden Boulevard and Floribunda Lane. Neither was injured in the crash.

Police said during the investigation, they also found marijuana, drug paraphernalia and alcohol inside the car.

Schmidt was charged with fleeing and eluding, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of alcohol under the age of 21, fFailure to report a crash, speeding and driving without a license.

He was committed to Cumberland County Prison on $60,000 bail.
