YORK HAVEN, Pa. (WHTM) – A body has been recovered from the Susquehanna River near the York Haven Hydro Station.
The body was found Monday morning near the hydroelectric power station and dam but was not immediately identified.
An autopsy is scheduled Tuesday.
The parents of 17-year-old Medard Kowalski Jr., a Cedar Cliff High School junior who went missing on the river December 1, spoke to reporters at the scene.
“It’s going to be 24 hours until a final identification is made,” Medard Kowalski Sr. said. “They are reluctant to make any decision prior to doing the full autopsy.”
The teen was canoeing on the river and was planning to hunt deer on Hoak Island.
“Just got into probably a little bit of a tough situation,” his father said. “It’s nobody’s fault, not the canoe’s fault, it’s just nobody’s fault.”
New Cumberland River Rescue searched for him for three-and-a-half months, most recently on Friday.
“The donations, rescue units, the police, the volunteers; I’d like to thank everyone personally,” Kowalski said. “You don’t know how much it has meant to me to see someone take time out of their work and look for my son.”
“He was a good kid. He was a giver, built duck houses for ducks, he helped the fish commission stock,” he said.
“It’s just a sad situation that he has gone before us. It’s just not right.”
